When we’re in need of a number of actors, which was the case when Down Gilead Lane first came to be, we hold an audition day right here in Grand Rapids, MI. Each person who auditions is given a script to read in front of a panel made up of the writers, producers, and directors of DGL. Those who audition are given only a short period of time to get acquainted with the script, because we need to see how well the auditioners can read.

After the auditions are complete, the judges will have the finalists back for a second audition a few days later; then a decision is made. Just because someone is professional, can act well and has an excellent speaking voice, doesn’t mean that he or she is going to get a part. Certain voice qualities are needed to fit the personality of each individual part.

We record DGL right here in a studio in Grand Rapids, MI. Because not all of our actors live in Grand Rapids and some traveling is needed, we only hold recording sessions twice each month. They’re a ton of fun to watch!

Why did you choose the name Down Gilead Lane?
– Sarah
There’s a mountain range north of the Dead Sea that reaches 3000 feet above the Jordan River valley. This region was named Gilead, or "a hard, rocky place." Gilead is not best known for its rockiness though, but for it’s healing. Scholars tell us that a tree that grew in Gilead produced a balm that acted similar to medicine, and people from all around would go to Gilead to seek this amazing, healing balm. The hard, rocky place was actually a place of healing.

Sometimes healing can be found only in the hard places. To be healed, we must go through hard times, only to find that through it all we’ve been made stronger! We develop patience and understanding through an argument with a friend or sibling, or an accident turns out to be an unexpected blessing. It’s through these hard places that the Lord provides healing. Exodus 15:26 says, "I am the Lord that healeth thee." It’s God’s grace in the hard places that brings peace – He is the balm in Gilead! Our story, DGL, is all about God’s grace. It’s about the healing and forgiveness that we all can experience when we give our lives to Jesus Christ. How did you pick the name Fin M’Coul?
– Amanda
The senior writer and creator of DGL, Beth Klima, has a huge, loveable dog of her own named Fin M’Coul. In Ireland, the name Fin M’Coul means "Gentle Giant." The real Fin lives up to his name!
Do the people in the program have to memorize their lines or do they just read them?
– Katie
When the actors arrive here at CBH on recording day, they are each given a script of the program they’re going to be recording. There’s no need for the actors to memorize the script, but they need to be prepared and get acquainted with the script when it comes time to record. They’re given time to read through their scripts and to practice saying their lines a few different ways to see what sounds best. Sometimes an actor ends up saying the line even better than the writers could have imagined it! But usually it takes quite a few tries to get the scene just right. We’ve been blessed with a very talented acting staff.
Is Grace really blind in real life?
– Joshua
Karen Leven, the actress who plays Grace Andrews, is not blind in real life. She does a great job though, doesn’t she? The writers of the program did a lot of research in the blind community, in order to make the part of Grace as realistic as possible. Add that research with Karen’s acting talent, and that equals Grace Andrews!
